Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA)

What for

Thyroid fine needle aspiration (FNA) is an effective test used to determine whether a thyroid nodule is malignant or benign. The procedure is relatively simple, painless, and usually takes less than 20 minutes.

Results are provided quickly and help decide whether the patient should undergo surgical intervention or conservative treatment.

A crucial factor for the success of the aspiration is the experience of the physician performing it. The material should be obtained not only from the largest nodule but also from all nodules and lymph nodes that, based on ultrasound findings, suggest a suspicion of malignancy.

The use of advanced techniques (such as color Doppler ultrasound and elastography) allows experienced practitioners to obtain material from areas of the nodule where cancer cells might be found, thereby significantly reducing the rate of false-negative results.
