Breast Elastography

Elastography is an advanced form of ultrasound based on the principle that applying pressure on a lesion can measure its elasticity compared to the surrounding healthy tissue. This allows the specialist to determine whether a lesion is malignant or not.

While a simple 3D ultrasound provides adequate information about the lesion’s solid or cystic nature, its blood supply, and its boundaries—whether they are clear, which usually indicates benignity, or unclear, which often suggests malignancy—there are cases where the radiologist cannot clearly characterize the lesion. In such cases, elastography becomes crucial.

Elastography complements breast ultrasound by offering additional insight. It has been shown that suspicious breast lesions are significantly stiffer than healthy breast tissue. Elastography enables comparison of the stiffness of each ultrasound-detectable lesion with the neighboring healthy tissue, making it an important tool for confirming the diagnosis.

It is recommended to contact the diagnostic center you will visit for details on preparation, as this may vary based on the patient's history.
